"For a doctor to your house in no time". "Weeknights, Weekends and Public Holidays". Dialling 13 55 66 just after 9 am on a Saturday morning produced the recorded message that the office was closed and would reopen at 12 pm. Phoning back at 12.10 pm, I underwent the slow process (including two "bear with me"s ) of registering my request. The background to my request is that my partner tripped and fell heavily and was admitted to hospital, where fractures to a bone in her neck, her nose and her knee were discovered. She now has a brace on her leg, which is to remain in place for six weeks and is therefore bed-ridden. After three days in Hervey Bay Hospital, she was transferred to PresCare Yaralla Transitional Care Centre, in Maryborough. This morning, Saturday, she found that she still had an obstruction in her throat, which she had discovered yesterday. Obviously ascertaining that it was not just a case of phlegm, she told the duty nurse who said that he would fax her doctor in Maryborough. To our knowledge , this doctor does not do house calls, and we considered this to be a pointless exercise. We therefore decided to call the House Call Doctor, with me calling from my home on my partner's behalf. The operator was given the address of PresCare Yaralla, Winston Noble Drive, Maryborough. She tried to insist on a street number but I did not have one (no number appeared on the sign outside the building) and I considered that the address supplied was adequate. I offered to supply the building name (Banksia House) and room number of my friend but was told that the doctor would obtain these details when he contacted my partner on her mobile (I supplied the number). At around two pm the doctor phoned me (not my partner) saying that they were not able to service the request in Maryborough today, because of the volume of requests and that the situation was likely to remain unchanged tomorrow. The service is flagged as available in Maryborough, with a local address now appearing on the Internet. I doubt the veracity of the doctor's statement, as I had phoned only ten minutes after 12 pm and I did not have to wait. I suspect that the doctor chose to place this request in the "extremely low priority" category, discounting any possibility of throat cancer, for example, and perhaps putting it down to being a case of a silly old lady panicking about phlegm in her throat. I contacted my friend who phoned the operator. I believe the latter wanted to ascertain the name of the building and room number but asked for the address. My partner, an 81-year-old lady still suffering from the effects of her fall, panicked at the question, as she knew only "Yeralla", as the establishment is known locally, having been confined to bed since her arrival. Without the "address", the operator said she could not proceed. There was no evidence of patient care or sympathy. I suggest that an operator with more flexibility of approach and a generally less rigid approach to her job would have been able to extract the information (room number and building number) which my partner knew. The word "address" was not helpful. There was no reason to cancel the visit on these grounds. I tried phoning after 2 pm but the message that the office was "closed until 12 pm" (presumably tomorrow, Sunday) was again in place. A heavy Saturday workload for this operator! Our experience of the House Call Doctor Service has been totally negative on this occasion.
